Our story.
Dishing up for Takapuna since 1977.
From our family to yours…
From humble beginnings, our story started when my parents migrated to NZ in the 80s. They met and fell in love in this beautiful country. Shortly after having me and my brother, my parents took over their first takeaway in New Lynn. My brother and I spent a lot of our childhood helping our parents at the takeaway (the rumour is that I started taking orders on a stool since I was 8 years old), even on Christmas Days!
My parents worked long hours, at times they were 18+ hour days so they could put food on the table for us, so fair to say that they are the reason for our work ethics. They showed us the importance of family, whether it’s to provide or care for them. We are forever grateful to our parents and the wider family for looking after us while our parents were working. It really does take a village to bring up a child.
Fast forward to 2006, our family took over Flying Horse Takapuna and started a new chapter of our lives. We fell in love with the vibrant community and what it has to offer. It’s a great mix of the old and new. It was a privilege to get to know our customers and the history of this Chinese takeaway. We learnt the store first opened its doors in July 1977 and has been proud to serve the community since then. We often hear customers telling us stories of how things were so different back in the 70s and the fond childhood memories of coming in to order their favourite meals while watching the chefs stir fry food in the woks.
Now that my parents have finally decided to step back to enjoy the fruits of their labour, my husband and I have stepped into the leading roles to continue their legacy and the spirit of Flying Horse Takapuna.
Looking back on my teenage and university years, I’ve worked in 8 different takeaways. I helped family members as they started their first takeaways. Aside from my experience of being in the industry since I was a kid, my previous professional career has also helped mould my vision of where I would like to take Flying Horse Takapuna in this new decade and I’m so excited for this journey.
We’re lucky enough to have loyal customers who have supported Flying Horse Takapuna from day one. If you’re ever in the neighbourhood, please drop in! We would love to meet you and introduce you to our menu, and have a yarn of course.
After all it’s not just about the food, it’s the people too! The food is an excuse to bring us all together.
We look forward to having you join our Flying Horse Takapuna family.
Much love,
Jo
